In October 1891 Blomfield spent a prolonged period journeying through the Nelson and Westland districts, travelling down the West Coast to Mount Cook. His paintings of this period focus on the majestic topography of the countryside. His precise rendering of the vegetation, light graduation and delicate chromatic effects combine to evoke the rugged, untrammelled grandeur of the New Zealand landscape. In a letter to his wife Ellen, dated 1891, Blomfield wrote: The scenery of this coast is very fine. The lofty snow peaks of Cook and Tasman…rise boldly from the dark forest which clothes their scarred shoulders right up to the snow line. The sombre green, broken here and there by the dazzling white of a giant glacier, which, like a foaming torrent, fills the deep ravines… And here in the foreground just where an artist would place them, the picture is completed by a group of stately pines.
