Provenance. Label Verso: Agnews, Manchester Paul Falconer POOLE (Bristol) 1807 – 1879 (Hampstead) A history and genre painter, Poole exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1830 until his death. He also showed works at the British Institute, the Society of British Artists and the New Watercolour Society. Poole became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1846, and was elected Royal Academician in 1878. Poole’s remaining works were sold after his death at Christie’s, May 8, 1880, and a memorial exhibition was held at the Royal Academy in 1884. The grandeur of Poole’s work in oils is reflected in the following quotation from Ruskin: “There has always been, in Mr Poole’s work, some acknowledgment of a supernatural influence in physical phenomena, which gives a nobler character than can belong to any merely literal study”. His watercolours often feature peasants and girls in country dress. The prevailing tone in these paintings in usually a tawny gold. The present painting of a reclining boy and standing girl on a headland overlooking the sea, shows a direct relationship with works by Poole that hang in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. These watercolours include Slate Wharf on the Bank of a River and The Sleeping Shepherd: Seascape with Moonlight Effect, 1879. |
