David F G BOYD Australian b. 1924 Painter and potter David Fielding Gough Boyd was born in 1924 in Murrumbeena, Victoria. He is a member of Australia's Boyd family artistic dynasty, which began in 1886 with the marriage of established painters Emma Minnie à Beckett and Arthur Merric Boyd. Notable descendants before David include Lucy de Guzman Boyd, Arthur Merric Bloomfield Boyd, Guy Martin à Beckett Boyd, David Fielding Gough Boyd, and Mary Elizabeth Boyd. In 1948 David Boyd married Hermia Lloyd-Jones, the daughter of graphic artist Herman and Erica Lloyd-Jones. Following the tradition of the Boyd family, their three daughters are artists. Having established himself as a potter, Boyd's painting career began in 1957 with a series of symbolic paintings on Australian explorers which focused on the tragic history of the Tasmanian Aborigines; understandably they provoked considerable controversy. Boyd developed a technique akin to Sfumato, which today is associated with Leonardo da Vinci's use it during the Renaissance. da Vinci described sfumato as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane." Boyd's method achieved this effect through a new technique involving the use of candle flame. Boyd's popularity continued to increase with his successive series of romanticised works based on historical themes. In 1958 he exhibited a series of paintings based on the histological episodes in the explorations of Burke and Wills, and Bass and Flinders. From 1950 Boyd held annual exhibitions across Australia and overseas, including retrospective exhibitions in London in 1969 and at Wagner Gallery, Sydney in 1983. In 1960 Boyd was elected President of the Victorian branch of the Contemporary Art Society and elected Councillor of the Museum of Modern Art of Australia. Boyd and his family moved to Rome in 1961, and later moved to London. They also spent several years creating art in Spain and the south of France before returning permanently to Australia in 1975. From 1993-1996 Boyd was artist-in-residence at the School of Law, Macquarie University, Sydney. In 1998 he became a member of the International Academy of Modern Art, Rome. |
