Nicolaas Johannes ROOSENBOOM Dutch 1805 – 1880 Born in Schellingwoude, The Netherlands, Nicolaas Roosenboom was a renowned painter who specialised in Summer and Winter landscapes, as well as river and town scenes. A student of Romantic artist Andreas Schelfhout, Roosenboom explored similar subject matter to his master in painting picturesque winter landscapes, a new genre Schelfhot had introduced in the early 19th century. Topographically more interesting than summer scenes, these snow scenes allowed for meticulous and colourful details, enabling Roosenboom to display his great talent for depicting the intricacies of weather in an apparently effortless and natural manner. A keen traveller, Roosenboom visited numerous Dutch towns and villages as well as further afield to Germany, Belgium, Scotland and Great Britain, but worked for the majority of his life in Amsterdam and La Haye from 1889. He also served as a mentor to painter F M Kruseman and was the father of Margaretha Roosenboom (1843 – 1896), a painter of Dutch still life. Along with several exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague, Roosenboom's paintings are in the collections of numerous Dutch museums, such as Amsterdam Museum and the Brussels museum. |
