Frederick ROE RI, RBA.
British 1864 - 1947

Fred Roe studied art at Heatherley's under Seymour Lucas (1849 - 1923), and worked in both oils and watercolours. Specialising in genre scenes of everyday life, he also painted military and historical subjects, as well as landscapes. Roe was step-brother to Robert Henry Roe.

Roe exhibited at the Royal Academy and other leading galleries from 1887. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1909 and became a member of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists in 1920.

As well as his paintings, he is known for his book illustrations and portraiture. Examples of his genre paintings can be found in public collections both in New Zealand (including the Auckland City Art Gallery) and overseas.

Roe died in London on the 16th August 1947.
